How many times can I renew an item?

Answer

Renewals depend on the type of item.

Books:  You have the potential to renew books six times as long as another person has not placed a hold on the item. This is true for books from Pilgrim Library AND for those borrowed through OhioLINK.  A loan renewal is for the same period of time as the original loan (21 days for students or community members; 42 days for DC faculty/staff)

Media Items:  Pilgrim Library and OhioLINK media items, such as CDs or DVDs, can be renewed three times.

Other reasons why you may not be able to renew an item:

  • If your record has been blocked, you will be unable to renew items.  This normally happens if you owe too much in fines.  Contact the library if you think this might be the case.
  • You might not be able to renew your item if the item's due date is still far off.  The system often only lets you renew items if they are close to their due date.
  • You will not be able to renew your items as long if they have any holds placed on them.  A hold means that someone else has requested your item and is waiting for you to return it so they can use it.  You are able to keep your item to the full extent of the original loan period, but you will be unable to renew and extend this period.

There are exceptions to these rules; for circulation questions, please contact Collette Knight at 419-783-2482 or knightc@defiance.edu.
