Answer

Pilgrim Library does not purchase textbooks; however, we do have a few options that may be helpful in the quest to save money on textbooks.

See if it is on Course Reserve

Some professors will provide copies of their textbooks to the library to put on course reserve. This means you can check out and use the material (typically) for two hours at a time in the library. You are welcome to make copies or scans of the book as well.

Search the DC and OhioLINK Catalogs

While we don't deliberately purchase textbooks, sometimes we happen to purchase the same book that you need for class. Sometimes we will own an older edition that does not exactly match your textbook but is close enough to still be helpful.  Be sure to check the DC Catalog to see if this is the case.

You can also check in the OhioLINK Catalog to see if any other schools own your textbook.  Sometimes other schools purchase textbooks but only circulate them on their own campus. Keep in mind that interlibrary loan is a process that takes time.  Be sure to pay attention to your due dates and renew as necessary to avoid fines or replacement charges!

Try ALL your options!

Sometimes saving money on textbooks means getting creative:

    • Have you considered renting your book instead of buying it? Or buying it as an eBook or audio book? Sometimes these options are much more cost-effective.
    • What about other library systems - the public library or your library back home?
    • Can you find someone on campus who will loan or sell you an old copy? Have you put up fliers or gotten the word out by Facebook/email?
    • Is there someone in your class who will let you share or make copies?
    • Sometimes your professor might have a copy or know where you should go to get one. Have you asked him/her?
